So on Friday Russia’s first ever floating nuclear power plant left the arctic port of Murmansk and set sail to provide power to some of the country’s remote areas.
The floating nuclear power plant known as Akademik Lomonosov, is said to be headed for Chukotka region which lies across the Bering Strait from Alaska.
The floating plant “Akademik Lomonosov” is 459-foot long and carries double 35-megawatt nuclear reactors.
The floating plant is gonna be replacing a co al-fired power plant in the town of Pevek
The floating power plant is capable of operating non-stop for 3 to 5 years without needing to refuel. The Akademik Lomonosov also comes with some really cool and relaxing facilities for the crew. Like a gym, swimming pool and a bar.
Well just as this might look like a thing of the future, a lot of concerns have been drawn saying that it could be very dangerous and hazardous to the environment.(yes to some extent)
According to Jan Haverkamp, a nuclear-energy expert at environmental nonprofit, he said ” They’ve literally said it unsinkable and those were the very words that were used for the Titanic. For me, that is an alarm light flashing very bright.”(common…what could possibly go wrong)
The Russian state nuclear company have began making moves towards selling custom-made floating nuclear power plants for countries around the world.(very good idea)
