Gupta was once the managing director at Disney India and Star before later joining Google. He is well known to have made one of the major push in the digital consumers business using video streaming service, Hotstar.
Hotstar gained most of it users through the popularity of cricket. According to reports, during a major cricket season earlier this year, Hotstar said that over 300 million users were enjoying the service.
Commenting on his new appointment Gupta said “it’s an exciting opportunity to leverage the power of technology to solve some of India’s unique challenges and make internet an engine of economic growth for people and communities. I am happy to join the passionate teams across Google and look forward to contributing to India’s digital journey as it becomes an innovation hub for the world.”
Although India contributes little to Google’s bottom line, it is still interesting to note that the company has grown rapidly, focusing on India and other Asian markets.
According to Scott Beaumont, president of Google’s Asia Pacific (APAC ), he said that the search engine operations in India “is important and strategic for it own sake and also for it innovation which then feeds breakthrough elsewhere in Google.”
