Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of electric car company Tesla, is said to be making preparations to launch its Starlink communication in Nigeria. If this establishment should be successful, then we are gonna be seeing some serious competition with existing network providers like MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile. Now for those who don’t know, Starlink is a company under SpaceX which is an American aerospace manufacturer and is also owned by the billionaire Elon Musk.

According to Elon Musk, he wants to bring in satellite-based broadband to the country, and his team is already pushing forward as the SpaceX team reportedly met with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Nigeria which is the continent’s largest economy met with the Starlink team to discuss plans on how they are gonna go about the whole thing. Starlink is also trying its best to acquire the license that allows them to set up their base in the country.
According to a report by the NCC, they said that “SpaceX is in the process of launching a low-earth orbiting (LOE) constellation of satellites to provide low latency, high bandwidths Internet to all corners of the globe and has identified Nigeria as a critical market.” It went on to read “SpaceX has been in discussion with NCC virtually over the past several months to begin the process of pursuing all necessary licenses to bring Starlink, its satellite-based broadband services to Nigeria.”
Right now the major and leading network service providers in the country are MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and 9mobile. From rumors going around, it is said that it would be a real competition for both Starlink and the Nigerian providers as Starlink hope to reduce the cost of data with their tech, which is something that been complained about a lot by Nigerians.
