So on tuesday Buzzfeed employees vote to unionize with NewsGuild of New York, after mass layoff by the company claiming in a statement that they have “legitimate grievances about unfair pay disparities, mismanaged pivots and layoffs, weak benefits, skyrocketing health insurance costs, diversity and more.”
This came weeks after the company did a massive layoff of employees more than 200, that about 15% of it work force. It was gathered that employees had to fight to be compensated for their earned paid time off after being fired.
BuzzFeed News Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith said in a statement: “We look forward to meeting with the organizers to discuss a way toward voluntarily recognizing their union.”
Well this is not the first time a top media company have seek to unionize, it been done before in the past, Vox Media, Slate, Thrillist, New York Media and many other digital media sites have all voted to unionize over the past year.
